Hurricanes Manuel and Ingrid – Mexico
Two separate storms overwhelmed western Mexico with rain in September, triggering widespread flooding and landslides. More than 200,000 people were affected in Guerrero state alone. In Acapulco, five feet of mud overtook vehicles and destroyed homes.

World Vision staff provided families in the Xochistlahuaca and Santa Catarina River communities in Guerrero with food, blankets, and tarps. In the long term, we will provide clean water, sanitation kits, and construction materials to help families rebuild their homes.

We will also operate Child-Friendly Spaces, where children have a safe place to learn, play, and receive counseling.

In 2013 natural disasters displaced some 22 million people, with more than four-fifths of those being in Asia, according to a new report. Using four decades of data, the study by the Norwegian Refugee Council found that floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, and other hazards now cause twice as many people to lose their homes as in the 1970s. Over the last decade an average of 27 million people have lost their homes to disaster each year, and in 2010 that number rose to 42 million. In an especially bad year of violent conflict, 2013 saw three times more people lose their homes to natural disaster than war; this ratio has been as high as ten times in the past.

The 2013 Colorado floods was a natural disaster occurring in the U.S. state of Colorado. Starting on September 9, 2013, a slow-moving cold front stalled over Colorado, clashing with warm humid monsoonal air from the south.[2] This resulted in heavy rain and catastrophic flooding along Colorado's Front Range from Colorado Springs north to Fort Collins. The situation intensified on September 11 and 12. Boulder County was worst hit, with 9.08 inches (231 mm) recorded September 12 and up to 17 inches (430 mm) of rain recorded by September 15,[3][4][5] which is comparable to Boulder County's average annual precipitation (20.7 inches, 525 mm).[6]

The National Weather Service's Hydrometeorological Design Studies Center stated in a document that the annual exceedance probability (AEP) for the entire rainfall event was as low as 1/1000 (0.1%) in places. [7]

The flood waters spread across a range of almost 200 miles (320 km) from north to south, affecting 17 counties.[8] Governor John Hickenlooper declared a disaster emergency on September 12, 2013, in 14 counties: Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Boulder, Denver, El Paso, Fremont, Jefferson, Larimer, Logan, Morgan, Pueblo, Washington and Weld.[9] By September 15, federal emergency declarations covered those 14 counties as well as Clear Creek County.

In late April 2014, a tornado outbreak in the central and southern United States produced multiple long-track tornadoes – seven were deadly, causing 35 fatalities.[2] One additional death occurred in Florida, due to severe flooding associated with this system.[3]

This event was the first major tornado outbreak to hit the US in 2014; it covered a large swath from Nebraska to Louisiana, Illinois to Florida, and Oklahoma to North Carolina.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A strong undersea earthquake hit eastern Indonesia on Saturday, triggering a small tsunami and some panic but no casualties or major damage.

The 7.1 quake occurred west of Halmahera island, which is about four hours' flight from the capital, Jakarta.

Indonesia's meteorological agency said a tsunami wave of 9 centimeters (3.54 inches) washed onto the small island of Jailolo but caused no damage. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later lifted its advisory for potential hazardous waves for coastal communities.

The quake was strongly felt in several cities in eastern Indonesia, sending many people to run from homes and other buildings, officials and residents said.

The world's largest archipelago, Indonesia is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

In 2004, a monster quake off the tip of Sumatra Island triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries. Most of the deaths were on Sumatra.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Tornado killed 9 children and lathed a 17-mile path into the landscape
The damage was 1.3 miles wide at its largest point
The EF5 whirlwind sheared houses, schools, businesses into sticks, bricks and shards
Deadly, powerful tornadoes come often to that region of the United States

(CNN) -- Max Broderick remembers exactly what he did a year ago Tuesday. He ran down fences, drove through fields and over curbs to get his family out of the way of the historic tornado that tattered Moore, Oklahoma.
The dark gray monster that killed 24, including 9 children, was in his rear-view mirror, lathing a 17-mile wound into the landscape that was more than a mile wide in places.
Once it was gone, the Brodericks returned to their hometown just south of Oklahoma City.
The whirlwind -- an EF5 tornado, the most destructive on the Fujita scale -- had sheared houses, schools, businesses into sticks, bricks and shards that lay jumbled and jagged in the straight-line rows of their subdivision streets.
The Brodericks' home and everything in it was gone, but something else was on Max's mind -- his neighbors who were missing.
He and other survivors ran up and down the street. "If you can hear me, call out," he cried to anyone who might have been stuck under rubble and still alive.

Typhoon Haiyan – Philippines
Considered one of the strongest storms ever to make landfall, Typhoon Haiyan tore through the central Philippines November 8, killing nearly 6,000 people and displacing more than 3.6 million.

The 13-foot storm surge and up to 235-mph wind gusts largely wiped out coastal cities and destroyed much of the region’s infrastructure, such as roads, water and sanitation systems, and telecommunications lines.

“When you look at the mountains, they look bare and stripped of all vegetation,” Aaron Aspi, a World Vision communications officer, told ABC Radio on November 11 from northern Cebu.

Within one month of the storm, World Vision had reached almost 150,000 people with emergency food, shelter, medical attention, and other assistance. It is preparing long-term efforts to help people in as many as 80,000 households in the disaster-prone country get back on their feet.

The search for the three remaining bodies was called off due to the difficulty and risk of retrieving them. Some Sherpa guides were angered by what they saw as the Nepalese government's meagre offer of compensation to victims' families and threatened a "strong protest" or strike. Popular international air routes connecting Europe, North America and Asia are at risk after airplanes were warned to avoid airspace near an erupting Alaska volcano as it spews ash 30,000 feet above sea level.
Winds have blowing ash from Pavlof Volcano to the west and southwest, warned the National Weather Service on Saturday.
Pavlof began erupting on Wednesday, pushing lava out from a vent near its summit and by Friday the ash cloud had reached 16,000 feet. The eruption intensified on Saturday morning, sending the ash cloud higher, said Dave Schneider, a geophysicist at Alaska Volcano Observatory.
It's not clear how long this eruption will last, Schneider said. Pavlof's eruptions may last for weeks or months with varying levels of intensity, he said. The eruption has had little effect on people on the ground. The closest community, Cold Bay, is 40 miles away.
Observers there reported seeing dark snow on the surface of the volcano on Wednesday, indicating an eruption had started.
There have been some small avalanches of hot rock down the north flank of the volcano. These may produce local mud flows to the north, but scientists say they would likely be minor.

A Russian research team including scientists, a medic and a professional climber has descended to the bottom of a giant sinkhole in northern Siberia in an attempt to discover its origins.

The 35-metre deep sinkhole was discovered in July after an unexplained eruption that flung soil and rock 120 metres from the site. It was initially thought it might be related to fossil fuel exploration, as it is 25 miles from the largest gas field in the region, but after a radar scan of the ground the team said it was most likely to be due to natural causes that would require further research.

The sinkhole was discovered and filmed from a helicopter this summer by oil and gas technicians on the Yamal peninsula, which in the language of its indigenous inhabitants who live north of the Arctic circle means end of the world. Two more unexplained sinkholes have since emerged in the far north of Russia. http://www.theguardian.com/world/natural-disasters

Amtrak service north of Penn Station has been halted, Metro-North Railroad suspended and Long Island Rail Road service has been reduced.
