When does a variation become an adaptation?

Favorable variations may allow an organism to be better adapted to its environment and survive to reproduce. Beneficial traits are favored in a population so that they may become better represented. Changes in the genetic makeup of a species may result in a new species; this is biological evolution.

If the environment changes, the mutation may be beneficial and it may help the organism adapt to the environment.

A variation turns into an adaptation when it has been passed on to its offspring.

Variation can become an adaption because if the mutation that causes the variation is beneficial for the species then the mutation will be passed down through generations until all of the species has that mutation.

A variation becomes an adaptation when the whole species inherits it and it is useful.
