Name a natural hazard that may become a natural disaster that could affect the state of Maine. What kind of preparation would you need to deal with the disaster?
A natural hazard that could turn into a natural disaster here in Maine, is lightning. A lightning bolt can signal the start of a tornado, or a giant storm.
A natural hazard that could turn into a natural disaster could be a hurricane, it is a hazard when it is in the ocean and as it progresses towards people and civilization.
I think it would be a flood or a blizzard. And we could prepare by making good shelters and have enough supplies to last through those natural hazards. They could last a while or they could last not even a day.
We have so many snow storms we've always been prepared for as long as I can remember. Flooding may happen in Spring but usually not too much so we don't really require preparement. Forest fires could happen but it's not particularly dry here in Maine. Forest fires caused by humans are their fault but usually put out fast, so no preparement besides having something as simpl as water. Hurricanes don't hit too hard here, but when they do occur staying inside and having extra food for incase power goes out is well recommended.
IN the event of a hurricane, (which is pretty rare in Maine,) It could trigger a flood. You would need to prepare by making sure that you have Important items stored for worst case scenarios, and getting up high. Just make sure that the walls around you are stable, because if high winds. If the walls break because of the high wind speeds or debris, you could get blown away, or if you are still up there, you are unprotected.
Maine does experience tornadoes but nothing as bad as the tornadoes in Tornado alley, you can go to a local grocery store and get a flash light and plenty of water and food and maybe a survival tool kit.
Blizzards, most definitely. You would need to get to shelter, and gather blankets, warm clothes, food, water, batteries, first aid kit, a portable radio, and flashlights.
Flashlight and extra batteries. Battery-powered NOAA weather radio and portable radio to receive emergency information. -------These may be your only links to the outside. Extra food and bottled water. High energy food, such as dried fruit or candy, and canned food -requiring no cooking or refrigeration is best. Manual can opener. Extra medicine and baby items. First-aid supplies. Heating fuel. Fuel carriers may not reach you for days after a severe winter storm. Back-up heating source, such as a fireplace, wood stove, space heater, etc. Fire extinguisher and smoke detector. Brush up on your fire safety knowledge by visiting our fire safety section.
