Glaciers and Erosion

Describe two ways in which a glacier can cause erosion.

Till and outwash are glacial deposits. Explain how till and outwash are different.
Going Beyond :
What do you think the map above represents? What do you think the color key means?

Till is a mix of different sized sediments dropped from the base of a glacier and can cover large areas of land. Outwash is Material deposited by a glacier.
I think the map represents the US during the ice age. I think the colors represent the height of the glaciers.

Two ways that glaciers cause erosion are they can drag rocks to leave groves in the ground. Also when it melts it can wash out the land. Till and outwash are different because outwash is when the materiel's are deposited from melting glaciers and till is a mixture of different sized sediment. I think the map represents how cold and where the most glaciers are. I think each color tells how cold it is in different areas or where the most glaciers in that area

Well if you think about it the glacier is a cheese grader and the land is the poor cheese well that is how the ground will be messed up.

They erode in two ways: abrasion and plucking.

Abrasion can only occur when the glacier is moving. Subglacial debris embedded in the base and sides of the glacier scrapes the valley base and walls as it moves through the valley.

Plucking involves the glacier moving over a resistant outcrop of rock where pressure-melting creates meltwater. The meltwater then flows to an area of low pressure where is subsequently refreezes attaching itself to both the surrounding rock and the glacier itself. The glacier then advanced physically ripping the rock out of the valley.

Till is deposited by glacial ice. Till is deposited almost exclusively in the ablation zone either by being plastered onto the underlying glacial bed by flowing ice or by sloughing off the glacier's surface as the ice melts. Till are generally unstratified and commonly consist of large rock fragments surrounded by a finer grained matrix of sand, silt, and clay.

Outwash is Sand and gravel deposited by melt water. Outwash are typicaly well sorted and stratified so they differ sharply from tills, which are unsorted and unstratified

a glacier will create a lot marks on the ground and on the mountains there are big holes in the sides called cirque. The difference between till and out wash is that till is the lose sediment under a glacier.out wash is gravel an rocks being carried in streams from a melting glacier.

Two ways a glacier can cause erosion is that they can scrape against rock and make little pieces then carry those pieces away. Another way a glacier can cause erosion is that it could be a valley glacier and it could be slowly eroding the valley. Till is different sized sediments falling from the base of a retreating glacier. Out wash is material deposited from the melt water of the glacier.

it could be two ways it makes groves in the rocks and how there are cold and warm

James D said...

it could take the trees down and cause erosion and drags on rock and drag rocks down hill.

Glaciers can cause erosion by quickly melting makes water flow fast removing sediment. Also plucking can occur which is when the movement of ice pulls pieces of rock out of the side of a hill and deposits the sediment elsewhere.

Till is boulder clay or other unstratified sediment deposited by melting glaciers or ice sheets.
Outwash is
Material carried away from a glacier by meltwater and deposited beyond the moraine.

The difference between till and outwash is till is unsorted and outwash is sorted.

Quickly melting glaciers can cause water to flow fast sediments, Also glaciers do move and when they do move it forms landforms such as flute. also plucking can also occur when the movement of ice pulls pieces of rock out of the side of a hill and places the sediment somewhere else.

Outwash is material deposited by the melted water of a glacier, mostly on the edges of a glacier. Till is different from outwash because till isn't from the melting of the glacier.
