Last Day of Javelina Week

There are three conditions needed for natural selection to occur are variation, fitness, and inheritability In other words are differences present, do the differences help a species survive, and can the difference be passed onto offspring.  Looking at the image below, what is the evidence of natural selection?

The cactus in the picture meets the three conditions for natural selection. First there is variation some cactus have spikes some do not have spikes. Second the spikes make the cactus more fit because the javelina does not eat the cactus with spikes. The trait of spikes is passed down to offspring as shown in picture four.

The cactus with spines has possessed a trait which allows it to defend itself from predators such as the javelina, so natural selection has occurred in picture four when the trait is passed down to the offspring, which will allow future generations to possess that trait, and reproduce. The other cacti, probably wont be around to reproduce. It does not possess a trait which protects itself from predators, thus it does not thrive.

The cactus with spikes has all three conditions for natural selection. First, we have variation. The variation is some cactus have spikes and some don't. Second, we have fit. The cactus is fit because it has spikes on it so the javelina doesn't eat it. Third, we have inherited. In the 3rd and 4th pictures, you can see the cactus reproduced and inherited the sharp spikes.

The cactus with the spikes had all three parts of natural selection. The variation is that some cactuses have spikes and others don't. The cactus is fit because it has spikes so the javelina doesn't want to eat it. The last part of natural selection of the spiked cactus is the inheritability. The cactus with spikes survived and reproduced and that cactus inherited the spikes which will give it a better chance to survive.
