Solving Problems with Science

We have been learning about issues in Science and seeing what solutions are available. When seeking solutions there are two area to consider criteria and constraints. What do the words criteria and constraints mean when engineering a solution in science ?

When engineering a solution criteria means judging a solution. constraints means you are limited to only a bit of information.

I Have no idea

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) represent a commitment to integrate
engineering design into the structure of science education by raising engineering design to the
same level as scientific inquiry when teaching science disciplines at all levels, from kindergarten
to grade 12. There are both practical and inspirational reasons for including engineering design
as an essential element of science education.

Doesn't make any sense

To sharpen the focus of problems by precisely
specifying criteria and constraints of successful solutions, taking into account not only what
needs the problem is intended to meet, but also the larger context within which the problem is
defined, including limits to possible solutions.

did you even read this Gareth????????

I don't know.

After the problem (thank you, picture), you identify the criteria and constraints.

The criteria is basically the way things are judged by other people.

The constraints are the limitations of the problem

Criteria means judging a solution.

Ask Evan

When you are engineering a situation criteria means to judge an answer. And a constraint means you can excess a certain amount of information.

Criteria is like the good data that you get from your experiment and constraints are your problems or struggles.

When engineering a solution in science, Criteria is a principle or standard by which something may be judged or decided. And constraints is a limitation or restriction.

Constraints and criteria are used in engineering design. The constraints mean the limitations on the design. Examples of constraints are available funds, resources and/or time. The criteria are the characteristics of a solution that is successful. Examples are desired function and/or a particular level of efficiency

Criteria is something that can be judged. Constraints means you're limited to infromation.

A constraint is a restraint or force. Criteria is plural for criterion which is a rule or a standard. For more information see

The word constraint means to have a limitation or restriction. It can also mean the stiffness of manner between two different people.
