F1 (First generation hybrid) seed means that the plants have a 100% chance that they will be exactly what the label says on the packet. This means that the farmer is guaranteed that what he sows will be what finally flowers and fruits. This is extremely important if the farmer is contract growing crops for a chain store where the product standards are exacting.

The alternative is cheaper F2 or open pollinated seed (OP); however the genetic purity of the seed cannot be guaranteed, as such the variation in the fruit size, shape, colour, flavour and time to reach maturity cannot be known.

Farmers might plant purebred crop seeds so that they are guaranteed to reap what they sow.

The Farmer might want to plant purebred seeds because purebred seeds are more likely to have a high level performance. For example, the seeds are more likely to grow bigger, and be more healthy.

The plants will be exactly as described on the pouch. For example, you won't get a half-sqaush when you planted a "pumpkin seed".

Farmers might use purebred crop seeds because they have a 100% chance that they will turn out exactly like it says on the package. This tells the farmer that what he plants is guaranteed to be what he wants.

Spencer Shields said...

Farmers would use them because they only have one attribute making them more efficient.
