Mountains 10.11.11

Appalachian
 Rocky Mountains
The Rockies and the Appalachian Mountains are at different stages of erosion. Do you think the Appalachian Mountains once looked like the Rockies? What do you think will eventually happen to the Appalachians and the Rockies as erosional forces work on the mountain ranges?

I think that the appalatians are a lot older because they are a lot smaller than the Rockies, meaning that they have endured more erosion.

THE ROCKIES ARE MORE OLDER BECAUSE THEY ARE WIDER AND BIGGER MEANING THEY HAD MORE TIME TO GROW.

Yes I do think that they once looked like the Rockies but over years erosion started to break them down.I think that eventually they will be broken down into different heights and shapes.

I think that the Rockies and the Appalachians were the same height when the last glacier happened.

I think taht the appalachian mountains looked like the rockies but they wind eroded them

Yes I do think that the Appalachians looked like the Rockies once. I think that the Appalachians will grow smaller and the Rockies will become less pointy.

After time the mountains will where away and new mountains will forms

i don't think the Appalachian mountains were as large as the Rockies once because they are in different places. different places causes different erosion and erosion forces. the conditions would have to be the same as the conditions where the Rockies are. i think the Appalachian and Rocky mountains will eventually,(over thousands and thousands of years),have so much erosion that they will be gone.

The Rockies and Appalachians will break down until there will only be a little hill left..Ya

Yes, I do think the Appalachians once looked like the Rockies. I think they will eventually be flat.

In the near future the appalation mountains will be eroded into hills and the rockys would look like the appalation mountains today. and the appalation mountains more than likely looked like the rockys.but because the appalation mountains are older they became smaller than the rockys.

i think the appalacians looked like the rockies at one point in time they will be flat

Yes but the way they look now is because of erosion started to brake it down.....

I think the Appalachian mountains weren't as large as the Rocky Mountains because they are far apart. They will eventually become the same.

I think that the Appalachian Mountains once looked like the Rockies. I think the two mountain ranges will go away!

I think that they will both form into each other then make little hills of pebbles.

i think the Rockies are bigger then the Appalachians mountains.
because the Rockies are pointed and the other isn't

i think that the rockys and the appilation mountains will shrink

Yeah I think the Appalachians did once look like the rockies . They will get weathered down into flat plains or small hills

I do think that the appalachian moutains looked like the rookies because of the water.Wind and gravity flatten the moutains.

they will get smaller over time. (both of them)

I do think they looked both the same and the rockies are taller because they are younger and they will both shrink because of erosion.

I think the app. were used to be like the rockies cause' they are more like hills instead of mountains. but the rockies will get smaller ove time like the app.

I think that the Appalachin mountains are alot younger so they are bigger and the Rockies are older so they are smaller they and both will get smaller over time.

i think the apalaichin mountains are older because they are rounder

Skye W said...

Yes. I do think that the Appalachian Mountains once looked like the Rockie Mountains because when the mountains are younger they have more of a point but, once they get older they start to brake down and get smaller. When it rains more and more of the mountain will start to erode. Also when you have gravity the gravity pulls the glaciers down the side of the mountain pulling a lot of different things with them.

Cameron T. said...

They both might end up on the same stage eventually but I can`t tell know. Maybe we will be able see them at their stages later.

Grace B said...

I think that the Appalachians looked like the Rockies a long time ago, when they were new mountains. I do think that they'll look like each other when gravity and glaciers wear them down to small hills, but that won't be for a long time.

Holly J said...

Yes I think the Appalachian once looked like the Rockie Mountains. After a while the both mountain ranges with be weathered and eroded so much they will just be hill and then when the hill weather they will be nothing!

Cameron T. said...

It also is affected by their location, the type of animals that live on them, and climate.

Sara H said...

I do think the Appalachian Mountain used to look like the Rockies, but they are eroding faster then the Rockies are. I think eventually both mountain ranges will wear down and become smaller and softer than they were before. Maybe more like hills but a little bigger.

Sarah M said...

yes i do think the Appalachian Mountains once did look like the Rocky Mountains. I think that slowly their height will decrease and the tops of the mountains will slowly get rounder and smoother over time due to the erosional forces around them.

Kasey G. said...

I do think that the Appalachian mountains once looked like the Rockies. This is because the Appalachian mountains are very smooth and this is because of erosion. It is very well possible that they once had a point but were eroded causing their now round shape. Eventually the mountains will become hills due to erosion and eventually nothing, but the Appalachian mountains will become hills first due to the fact they are more eroded than the Rockies already. Also, this will not happen until several thousand, perhaps million years from now.

I think the Appalachian mountains onece look looked like the Rockies. After years, the mountains weathered and eroded, and thats why the look different now.

Gracie N(: said...

I think the Appalachians did look like the Rockies at one point, but erosion started breaking them down. I think the Appalachians and the Rockies will get smaller as erosional forces work on the mountain ranges.

Liz N. said...

The reason the rocky mountains look different than the Appalachian mountains is because the rocky mountains are younger than the Appalachian mountains. Which means that when the mountains are younger they have pointier tips. So the Appalachian mountains have been eroded down to be shorter and rounder. I do think that the Appalachian mountains did once look like an actual mountain like the Rocky mountains but they are older so they have been being eroded longer so now the Appalachian Mountains look more like valleys than mountains

Erik C said...

I think the Appalachian mountains once looked like the Rocky Mountains, but the Appalachians might be older and might have been weathered shorter and rounder over a longer period of time.

Ronahn said...

Over time, erosion wore down the Appalachian peaks and made them smaller and rounder. The Appalachian mountains are probably older the the Rocky Mountains. So, yes, I think that the Appalachians once looked like the present Rockies do.

Archer t said...

The Appalachians were formed before the Rockies and therefore, the Appalachians have had more time to erode so yes, I think millions of years ago, the Appalachians looked like the Rockies. In the future, the Appalachians will probably be small hills and the Rockies, rolling mountains.

Isaiahp said...

The appalachian mountains used to look like the rocky mountains and I think both of the mountains will eventually break apart and start getting smaller and then become hills.

Tanner McClure said...

I think that the Appalachians once did look like the Rockies, one time when the Appalachians were newer. Over time the Appalachians broke down from weathering and forces.

matt c said...

i think that the mountains did look the same but the glaciers and gravity shaped them differently.
then they will be eroded down to little hills.

Erik C said...

Both ranges will get shorter and rounder, but the Appalachians will always be shorter and rounder.

Nick M. said...

I think the Appalachian Mountains are a lot older then the Rocky Mountains because they have experienced more erosion, therefore making them more round, where the Rocky Mountains are sharper and taller and have not experienced as much erosion.

Anonymous said...

i think there the different because they are in areas and also because one set of mountains is newer the appalachian mountain is older and they got rounded and the Rockys are younger

no because the appalachian mountains are older and and the other mountains are younger.

The Appalachians are older than the Rockies, because the Appalachians have been through eroision which made them so small.

the rocky mountains will fet smaller like the appliacion mountain because of erosion and the applicaion mountains will eventually turn into hills and the will soonly break!

rocky mountains are pointy at the top and appalachion mountains are round at the top because of weathering. So the weather has chipped the mountain and broke it down at the top of the mountain.

Yes, the Appalachian mountains and the Rocky mountains are at different stages of erosion. That is probably for many different reasons. Age, weather, and climate play huge parts in what the mountains look like. Wind, rain, all aspects of weather affect what the mountains look like. In all of these theories keep in mind that I'm thinking that the Appalachian Mountains are SOOOO much older than the Rocky Mountains. But on another subject, think about the Great Plains in the mid U.S. Those plains, millions and millions of years ago, might have one day been mountains. Maybe they will be in the future. Also, the Rocky Mountains or even the Himalayas might have been plains millions and millions of years ago. Now back to the subject of Appalachian and Rocky Mountains. The Appalachian Mountains are obviously much older than the Rocky Mountains. That is why the Rockie's are so tall and jagged, but the Appalachian Mountains are all slopey and round. They are definitely NOT in the same stages of erosion. They Appalachian mountains are much farther in than the Rockies. In fact, the Rocky Mountains are MUCH younger than the Appalachian Mountains. I think eventually both mountain ranges will become plains, but my guess is that unless the erosion levels differ then the Appalachian Mountains will become a plain much sooner than the Rocky Mountains. On another point I DEFINITELY think that the Appalachian once looked like the Rockies. Well, not exactly the Rockies, as they were in a different part of the country and no two things are exactly the same as anything else. And maybe even when the Appalachian Mountains looked like the Rockies, there were different animals living in the area.

Aaron R said...

yes the appalachian mountains mountains were as big as the rockies in fact, they were much bigger. they were actually much bigger than the himalayas thousands or maybe millions of years ago. then as the weathering worked on the appalachian mountains they were weathered down to where they are now. this happened over a period of time. The rockies are considered a fairly small mountain compared to the himalayas and if the old appalachian mountains and the himalayas were compared the himalayas would be considered a small mountain. the appalachian mountains are the oldest mountains in the world the rockies are fairly young but the himalayas are the youngest mountain range in the world. you can tell this is true because they are the biggest, tallest, and highest mountains in the world and are still growing. the appalachians stopped growing thousands of years ago. The rockies are still growing as well as the himalayas. in thousands of years the appalachians will be just a bunch of hills and the rockies will either be about the size of the appalachians or the size of the himalayas.it could be either because since they are still growing, they could just keep on doing so, or weathering could become so severe that it would cause them to stop growing and *shrink* to become the size of the appalachians. the himalayas will probably also shrink to the size of the appalachians.
