Hot Spring 10.24.2011

Imagine you are a Japanese macaque and it's a cold snowy day. What do you do? If you're lucky, you live near a hot spring where you could find a warm refuge from the winter storm. The Japanese macaque lives further north than any other ape or monkey.
How can you tell the water in this spring is hot?
Where do you think the water in the hot springs comes from?
Discuss your ideas with  a partner

The water is steaming and the water is getting warmed up by lava underground.

You can tell if the water is hot by if there is steam coming of the water.I think the water comes from when it rains or storms.

you can tell its hot by the steam, the red monkeys....... and the temperature. the water from the spring comes from melted snow and its hedated by a volcanoe.

You can tell the spring is hot because its steaming.
I don't know where it comes from.

1. Because it is smokey.
2. I think it flows from a riverand makes a hot spring.

1. You can see the steam in the back of the monkeys.
2. The water probably came from rain showers.

Well the water in the springs will be steaming.

I think it comes from average water and rain but overtime it becomes increasingly hot due to temperature.

i can tell that the spring is hot because if i look at the water, there is steam coming up from it, also the monkeys look really happy. I think that the springs are just ponds that are above a volcano or something hot, that get heated by it.

1 The water is hot because around it there is snow and if it was not hot then it would freeze over.
2 I have seen a program on TV about this and the water is heated by lave under ground and then it comes up in the springs and makes little pools.

You can tell that it is warm because it is at the bottom of the trees and the trees block the coldness and the sun warms it up. The water comes from the mountains snow that melted.

molly m said...

1.The snow looks melted and it looks like there is steam.
2.The sun might be beaming down on the water heating it up or maybe the water at the bottom went to the top and it was hot. ???

you can tell you're at a hot spring because the water inside of it is steaming. the water in a spring comes from groundwater

2. I think the water comes from the rain or from a river.

I can tell the water in the spring is hot because there is steam coming from the background. I think the water in the springs come from the water underground or rain or rivers and it might suck up the water and heat it up and then make the steam.

I can tell that the water in the hot spring is hot because you can see the steam in the air raising off the water. The water in the hot spring comes from multiple springs in the ground that get so close to the core at the center of the earth so it warms up.

I can tell that the water is hot because it would be frozen if it wasn't. The hot water is probably coming from inside the earth.

JordanF said...

I can tell that is hot because the snow all around is melted and that is why the rocks around it are wet. Maybe a volcano erupted and lave hit the ice or something.

How I know is The water is steaming and smoke comes up and it is getting hotter by the lava beneath the hot springs (:

There would be steam coming up from the ground where the water is,and the water probably comes from under ground and gets hot because of lava.

How can you tell the water in this spring is hot?
Because when hot water and cold air mix mist forms tiny drops of water.
Where do you think the water in the hot springs comes from? under ground. Monkeyssssssssssssss ya

The water is steaming. The water is from a spring and it in heated by magma.

I think the water comes from the groundwater and the aquifers.

You can tell the water is hot because it's steaming. I think the water comes from an underground cave.

You can tell the water in the hot spring is hot because you can see the steam coming off of it. I think the water from the hot spring is an example of natural geothermal heating and it comes from the ground.

Cameron T. said...

You can tell because you will see steam and if you don´t than you can stick your finger in the water. I think the water is from underground near lava.

Connor P said...

The water would be boiling or bubbling. The water might come from an underground spring that is very close to a source of heat.

Sarah M said...

The water is steaming so it is hot. I think that it came from a underground spring.

The reason you can tell the spring is hot is because there is steam coming up from the water and I think it is either a geyser type spring or it is near something hot like a volcano or something like that.

There is steam coming from the spring. The water would come from a place where there is heated material such as lava. If there is steam coming from the water it means it is hotter than the air around it.

Nick M. said...

I can tell the water in the spring is hot because behind the monkeys their is steam coming from the water. The water from the hot spring probably comes from a long ways away down in the earth or from a nearby volcano. I have heard that volcanoes can heat up water. It is probably because of geysers or streams that are really close to the center of the earth.

Mason B said...

If I were a Japanese macaque I would move to someplace warmer, or at least near a hot spring. I would know that it was hot by the steam floating into the air and the reason why it would be hot would be because of underground magma chambers.

I think that the water comes from an underwater stream.

The way I can tell the water in the spring is hot is because theres steam coming out of the spring in the picture. Water that is in hot springs and geysers comes from the ground, and I'm pretty sure its distilled.

Spencer P. Shields said...

I can tell the water is hot because there is steam. The water comes from the hot core of the earth. This water is found very deep underground where there is a break in the surface allowing the hot air to flow into the water and heat it. It is like a natural hot tub I have a hot tub it is hot! The water itself comes from the water underneath the ground. There are lots of hot springs all over the world but eventually they dry up because the water gets so hot it evaporates
