Erosion and Man Made Structures

The question is why is it not a good idea to build on a steep slope?

Also, say  you decide to build on a steep slope what kinds of  precautions should  be taken.

  1. it is not a good idea to build on a steep slope because the slope might erode or a rockslide might happen!

If you did build on a steep slope you would need to make a HUGE foundation.

  2. Brian B, it is a bad place to build because over time your house will tilt and eventually your house will fall over.

  3. Because it could easily shift.

  4. Because they climate and stuff will cause they slope to fall or get steeper. im first

  6. It's not a good idea to build on a steep slope because you our what you're building could fall down the slope.

  7. it is not a good idea to build on a hill because wash out on you.

    ReplyDelete
  8. it isn't a good idea to build on a steep slope because the building could colapse and slide down the slope and possably kill somebody. the procations you could take would be to build a tiny building and make a really good cellar

    ReplyDelete
  9. Erosion will cause the land under the building to be washed away, and over time the house will fall to the bottom of the slope.

  12. Its not good to build on a steep slope Because it's steep and if it rains it will run down on whatever you built.

  13. It is not a good idea to build a steep slope , because when it rains it will cause a mud slide and it will slide down!

  14. it would be hard to with a steep slope because it could have a rock slide or a mud slide Alexander p

The reason is because of slumps which can wash away the foundations of the building.
To take precautions, plant grass and other plants to hold the soil there.

  17. its not good to build on a steep slope because it might fall from the erosion. And if u do build on a steep slope you should make the slope flat with cement.:D

    ReplyDelete
  18. Rand N.
The reason is because it could mudflow and the house would fall down if something hit the top of the house and it would fall down. Precautions would be build a cement base outward so it doesn't fall down.

  20. because rain could wash it away

    ReplyDelete
  21. Earthquakes and rain can cause the Earth materials to weaken and eventually causing them to move downhill.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Gavin L.
you could also use rocks to hold the soil from moving or you could plant trees around the house so the roots would hold the soil and wind and rain don't wash away the dirt from under the house.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You would need strong walls and a giant foundation.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Because water can wash the thing away

    ReplyDelete
  25. It would not be a good idea because the landskape could erode and destroy everything that you have built

  31. If u built on a steep slope your house would eventually fall unless u would build it with a strong foundation but after a while ur house would tilt

    ReplyDelete
  32. Its not a good idea to build on a slope because the slope will continue eroding and your house will break or fall

  33. you would need strong foundation

    ReplyDelete
  34. you would need a strong foundation and pillars to hold up your building

    ReplyDelete
  35. Its not a good idea because it would all fall down. The precautions you would need if you were going to build something on a steep slope would be that there is a big possibility it would fall over.

  61. the house would get caught in a land slide

    ReplyDelete
  62. It is not a good idea to build your house on a slope because, if there ever was any water the foundation would eventually crack and make the house start to brake into pieces. Also if there was enough rain the house, depending on how well it was built could eventually slowly start to slide out of the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  63. im scared, slopes are freaky

    ReplyDelete
  64. Avalanches would make stuff like rocks fall on whatever it is they're building.

one question how does something so hard break??

    ReplyDelete
  67. Because in the wind the building would gradually shift and the eventually could fall. Unless you drill large polls in the ground to make it a good foundation and it wold less likely to fall down.

    ReplyDelete
  68. the house could get cought on fire and burn as it fell down the mountian

    ReplyDelete
  69. i spelled that wrong srry

    ReplyDelete

  72. it wouldn't last very long, but people have built houses on slopes and it lasted

    ReplyDelete
  73. No it wouldn't Phinney?? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  74. There's a simple reason why we shouldn't build houses on slopes:it just wouldn't work at all.

    ReplyDelete
  75. This will not last very long

    ReplyDelete
  76. u r dome to build something on a slope.dont do it

    ReplyDelete
  77. i don't think it would catch on fire. it might fall on someone.

    ReplyDelete
  78. If it flooded it would sink

    ReplyDelete
  79. What does the C in E=MC^2 mean?

    ReplyDelete
  80. then there would be a million dollar house anymore

    ReplyDelete
  81. It isn't a good idea to build on a steep slope because erosion could occur and it could knock your house down.

If you were to build on a steep slope, you would need a big foundation with a lot of support or try to flatten the slope a little bit.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Yes it would connor

    ReplyDelete
  83. gravity could make make you building slide downhill

    ReplyDelete
  84. It would not be a good idea to build on a steep slope because if too much weight is put the slope it might collapse and you would die. It might also flood and you would drown and die.

    ReplyDelete
  85. It wouldn't be smart to build a house on a slope because it may make the earths surface crack which may cause a rock fall and destroy the house.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Your house would die in the slide... I'm gonna make my house on a gental slope or plain.

    ReplyDelete
  87. It is not a very good idea to build on a steep slope because it would probably cause an avalanche.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Archer Thomas

If you build on a steep slope, during rain storms, the fragile slope will fall down taking one's beloved million dollar home down with it. That happens a lot in California were people like to live on cliffs for the view and when it does rain, their house ends up wrecked at the bottom of the slope.

    ReplyDelete
  89. It is definately not a good idea to build on a steep slope, because bad things could happen. Rock slides, are among the worst. Some precautions you could take could be, building a cement walls around your building to protect you, or jus† not build on the hill in the first place

    ReplyDelete
  90. building on a slope on the coast is a VERY BAD IDEA. But that's what movie stars are for right? Making the bad decision

    ReplyDelete
  91. i think that it would fall as soon as a heavy rain shower happened. i would not build my house directly on the ledge.

    ReplyDelete
  92. It is not a good idea to build on a steep slope because rain can make the dirt turn into mud and the building could fall down; and if its on a slope near a body of water, it could fall into the water or a storm could trow water onto the building.

    ReplyDelete
  93. It is a bad idea to build your house on a slope because the ground might shift and your house might die.

    ReplyDelete
  94. But they still have too much money

    ReplyDelete
  95. Where ever you put your house it's gonna be in danger from something.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Of course the house would get flooded connor

Hi I love science. You should make a big foundation and support beams for anything that you would build on a steep slope because since it is leaning it would fall without extra support.

    ReplyDelete
  98. You should not build on a steep slope because of possible land shift. Also, extra stress would be placed on any support beams. The house or building would be vulnerable to wind. Rain would wash down the steep slope and cause damage to the house. The house might fall down and/or slide down the hill. If you do decide to build on a steep slope, build a large foundation and have your house inspected often. Fix any damage to support, and take safety precautions during storms like hurricanes.

    ReplyDelete
  99. it is not a good idea to build on a steep slope because if there is not enough support it could just fall right down.... and people would die..

    ReplyDelete
  100. I would be dangerous to build on slope because there could be a rockfall or rock slide. There could be a mudslide too.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I think the house would fall as soon as any type or percipitation came, it would get swept away

    ReplyDelete
  102. On a hill it's in danger from slides, on a plain from tornadoes and floods. But probabely earth quakes. }:)

    ReplyDelete
  103. It is not a good idea to build a house on a steep slope because there is a chance that the house could slide down the slope. Also, it might be on water and the water can make the hill face slide down in layers. Slowly the edge would come closer to the house, and soon your house would fall. Killing you and your family.

    ReplyDelete
  104. there are many consequences to living on a steep slope. Some of them are mudslides rock slides and avalanches. All of these depend on what type of slope you chose to build the house on

    ReplyDelete
  105. it is a super stupid idea

    ReplyDelete
  106. Building on a slope is bad because if it rains or the water erodes the cliff and your house might fall and you will be homeless

    ReplyDelete
  107. If your house is on the coast AND on a hill your dead anyway.

and, if u decide you just HAVE to build on a slope, you should build it not to close to water. and you should have alot of precausions to keep it in place.

    XD - Stay Frosty

    ReplyDelete
  109. It is not a good idea to build a house on a steep slope because there are chances that the house might fall down and chances are you could die if you were in that house. Erosional forces wear away dirt and rocks, e.t.c. So the house will wear into the ground and stay their if it wasn't in a steep slope, but sense it is it will go through the slope and will fall to the ground and off of the slope

    ReplyDelete
  110. if you built on a house that would be stupid because if the ground shifted it would fall! :)

You have to be careful when building on steep slopes, especially in a place with lots of rain. Mudflows, rockfalls and rock slides could occur, which is extremely dangerous to nature as well as man made structures. Any building, no matter what it is, you must be careful where you put it.

  113. It is not a good idea to build on a steep slope because it's very possible that the land will shift. If you have to build on a steep slope make sure to also build a concrete wall that will help stabilize the slope. You might also want to plant some vegetation with deep roots because the roots will help stabilize the soil.

    ReplyDelete
  114. If your house is on the coast( like movie stars) and is on a hill you are not likely to have a home there very long. HAha Irene is coming for you

    ReplyDelete
  115. the coast is not a good place to live for the sake of erosion

    ReplyDelete
  116. don't build your house on a steep slope or it might slide don because of natural disasters.:)

    ReplyDelete
  119. you could lose your limbs

    ReplyDelete
  120. PEOPLE WOULD DIE

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  127. You should never build on a steep slope if you don't have to. Although, some precautions you could take is make sure you have a sturdy foundation, plenty of healthy plants and trees with good root systems to hold the soil and prevent runoff after a heavy rain, and concrete walls or boulders can also help reduce erosion.
