Well, the discus can be thrown farther with the same acceleration because F=ma, which means you need more force to throw the shot put the same distance as the discus.
I think it has a much greater mass because it get's more acceleration. It is also a lot lighter in weight which makes it more easy to throw and will go further.
The Discus has less weight and can be thrown further like a Frisbee, unlike the shot put where you throw it up in the air. And gravity can pull the shot put down to the ground faster.
