What does the organelle do ?

The last post asked you to find a name of an organelle. Today please name one organelle and what its specific function is in the cell. Pick and organelle and post what it does in the cell.

  1. An organelle controls what substances come in and out of the cell.

  2. Mitochondrion, a organelle in a cell, has the specific function of producing energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate, or ATP. The materials used to make some ATP are the foods we eat. The other function of Mitochondrion, is called "Programmed Cell Death". This occurs during development as the organism is pruning away unwanted, extra cells.

  6. The nucleus controls all the activities of a cell since it contains the genetic material of the cell. Its main function is regulating, replication and expressing if the gene. It may be referred to as the brain of the cell.

  16. 1. Cell Membrane - Protects cell from harm and regulates material flow in and out of the cell
    2. Mitochondria - Creates ATP, the energy use by the cell.
    3. Nucleus - Holds DNA, and gives the rest of the cell orders.
    4. Nucleolus - Organelle within the nucleus. Makes ribose, which creates ribosomes.
    5. Golgi Apparatus - Organelle that packs materials and sends them off in vesicles.

  18. Lysosomes are membrane-enclosed organelles that enfold an array of enzymes capable of breaking down all types of biological polymers including proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. They function as the digestive system of the cell, to digest food or break down the cell when it dies.

  21. Literally, the term means "little organs". As the body is composed of various organs, the cell, too, has "little organs" that perform special functions. They are membrane-bound compartments or structures of a cell.

  25. Well I did this yesterday but I will say it again with a different organelle. Vacuole organelles store food, water and waste.
