Before photography, scientist would draw very detailed pictures of what they were studying, when I looked up James John Audubon, I found drawings of birds.
i think that scientist drew data and pictures before they had photography and i found that there was a lot of pictures of people but mostly animals like birds.
I think that the people would draw what they saw or if it was like a gravestone they might take a large piece of paper and then take like a piece of graphite and scribble over it because it will leave marks on the paper.
For a visual record before photography, I think scientists went outside or wherever the needed to be and draw everything they saw. James Audubon was an ornithologist, naturalist, and painter.
Before cameras and film, scientist used to draw pictures of what they were doing most of the time or they would write it out. John James Audubon was a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. He was notable for his expansive studies to document all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats. from wikipedia.
