Science in Salem
Thinking about the trip to Salem. How can we connect Science in Salem?
Watch the video
Do you think science could have saved the Salem from the witch trials ?
What else in on the Salem trip might relate to science in general or specifically what we have studied so far this year?

Ground Water Pollution
Given the way groundwater collects in aquifers, how might pollution collect in aquifers?
Do you think pollution would be easier or harder to remove from groundwater or from surface water?

Hot Spring 10.24.2011
Imagine you are a Japanese macaque and it's a cold snowy day. What do you do? If you're lucky, you live near a hot spring where you could find a warm refuge from the winter storm. The Japanese macaque lives further north than any other ape or monkey.
How can you tell the water in this spring is hot?
Where do you think the water in the hot springs comes from?

Rate of Flow 10.21.2011
How is a stream's rate of flow related to the amount of erosion it causes? How is it related to the size of the sediments it deposits?

Old River 10.20.2011
One of the oldest rivers in the United States is the New River.
These are some pictures of the New River.
From the pictures what makes this look like on old river?
Google up at least two facts about the New River and post them.

White Water 10.19.2011
Why is most white water rafting done in young rivers?
Have you ever been on a river like this ?
Would you like to some day ?

Rivers 10.17.2011
This is the Saco river. How might the color of this river and others change after a big storm? Also what is a freshet and how have they effect the towns along the Saco river?

What is your favorite erosional force
What is your favorite erosional force that we have learned about so far? We have covered wind gravity and glaciers. Coming next Water Erosion and Deposition.
Prairie grass and wheat
The roots of wheat are not very strong or deep. The roots of prairie grass are strong. Plowing up a field of prairie grass and planting wheat could lead to erosion.
Why might erosion occur?
What might be done to help stop the erosion?

Mountains 10.11.11
Appalachian
Rocky Mountains
The Rockies and the Appalachian Mountains are at different stages of erosion. Do you think the Appalachian Mountains once looked like the Rockies? What do you think will eventually happen to the Appalachians and the Rockies as erosional forces work on the mountain ranges?Thursday, October 6, 2011
Gardens 10.6.2011
Consider two garden plots, one in the open country and one in a city. How would you expect the forces of erosion to be different in these two locations?

Michigan Dunes 10.5.2011
Sand dunes are found on the eastern and southeastern shores of Lake Michigan. However, they are not found on the western shore of the lake. Why?

Test # 1
Soon there will be a test over what we have learned so far this year.
In your post today suggest a question for that test and post your answer to that question.
Remember questions should be only about what we have covered.
