Erosion by Wind 9.26.2011

This is a sand fence on Natucket Island Mass.  What does this fence tell you about wind erosion and the dunes?  Why do you think there is more sand on one side of the fence? Why do you think the fence was put there?  Feel free to do some web research to answer these questions. Also post any additional questions that this picture brings to you.

  5. the wind is strong. it carries the sand from one place to another, burying the fences beneath the sand. there is more sand on one side of the fence because the wind is blowing in one direction, so the sand is higher on one side than the other. the fence is probably put there to separate the land or property.

  7. That the wind erosion is bad and it would cover the plants. Because there is vegitation on 1 side and there is no vegitation on the other side. So that some of the sand would stop.

  8. wind could have caused the sand to blow to the other side.

  10. 1. That wind erosion can be powerful and can drag large amounts of sand at a time

2.I think that there is more sand on the oppisite side of the fence because the fence helps keep the sand on tfhat side.

    3. I think that the fence was put there so that not as much of the sand could be blown over to the other side of it.

Why is there grass on one side of the fence and not the other?

  11. the fence tells me about wind erosions because of the fence it looks like it is leaning from wind.there is more sand on 1 side of the fence compared to the other because of the sand the was blown. i think the fence was put there because the sand will seperate the unes

  12. 1 The fence tells how bad the the wind erosion, the higher the sand on the fence the more wind erosion there is.
2 I think there is more sand on one side of the fence because the plants roots on the left hold in the sand as the wind blows.
3 I think the fence is there to keep people on the path and out of the dunes.

  16. 1. The Wind Is Very Strong.

    2. On one side there is more sand and on the other its less sand because the strong wind blew it to one side.

    3. The fence is there to separate properties like houses

  17. It tells you that wind pushed it over one side of the fence. There's more sand on one side because the wind blew it to that side. They could have put it there because there's an endangered species.

  21. It tells me that sand dunes are very strong and so is the wind.I think there is more sand on one side of the fence then the other because waves wash the sand away.I think the fences are put there because people didn't want the waves to wash away the land.

  34. 1. There could have been a very strong wind and made the sand go to on the other side.

2 There is more because the fence blocks it.

  35. The fence looks kind of broken and its leaning , probably because of the wind , I'm guessing.

  36. There is more sand on one side of the fence because of sand dunes and wind erosion. The fence might be put there to keep people away, for decoration, or to protect the grass from wind erosion

    ReplyDelete
  37. the wind blows sand into dunes and they usuauly moves and shifts . the fences are blown down and then covered in sand . they are usualy put there to block off dune grass since its endangerd

  38. What does this fence tell you about wind erosion and the dunes? That the wing is very strong. Why do you think there is more sand on one side of the fence? umm because the wind blew it. Why do you think the fence was put there? so things wouldn't blow on the land.

    ReplyDelete
  39. There is more sand on one side of the fence because of the wind blowing it back. The picture tells me that wind makes dunes.

    ReplyDelete
  40. this is prof of wind erosion. there is evidence of wind forming dunes and the fence blocks the sand from going into the ocean

    ReplyDelete
  41. 1. it tells you that the wind is strong and is (2) mostly going in the same direction.
    3. I think they do that to protect the path slightly from blowing debris

    ReplyDelete
  42. There is more side on one side of the fence is because that's what the fence was put there for.

    ReplyDelete
  43. This fence tells me that in the dunes sand erosion is common because of all the sand. I think there was more sand was on one side because that is the way the wind is coming from. I think the fence was put there it was acting as a perimeter for the beach.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The sand must have been blowing against the fence for quite a while so the sand eroded the fence which made it bend and probably made a hole under the fence which when the sand blows under the fence which explains the more sand on one side

    ReplyDelete
  45. 1. The fence tells us that the wind blows the sand in different places because you can see the sand building up along the fence.

    2. I think more sand is on one side of the fence because the wind is blowing and the sand builds up against the fence and doesn't blow down the other side because the fence is in the way.

3.I think the fence was put there to keep the sand from blowing toward houses and prevent more sand dunes to be made.

    ReplyDelete
  46. This fence tells that the wind blows sand around and the fence was erected to keep the sand from going someplace people don't want it to go. There is probably more sand one one side than the other because the grass roots lift it up a few inches

    ReplyDelete
  47. A sand fence is a very effective way of preserving a beach. It slows down sand from moving forward so the beach stays were it naturally was at the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  48. ya the wind is probably strong but it could have formed over a long period of time

    ReplyDelete
  49. the fence tells me that there is a large amont of wind erosion and dunes. there is more sand on one side of the fence instead of the other because the fence blocks sand on one side so it builds up.i think that the fence was put there to stop the sand from coming up from the beach.

    ReplyDelete
  50. It tells me wind is very powerful and is worth taking precautions against. I think there is more sand on one side of the fence because the fence is blocking the wind from reaching that side. I think the fence was put there to keep the wind from burying the grass in sand.

This tells me that sand can be easily moved by wind. There is more sand on one side of the fence because the fence stopped the sand from coming to the other side of the fence. The fence stops people from crossing over to the other side. It could be a property line or just a fence to keep people out. It doesn't look like it is very successful.

  52. the wind erosion could have been going on for a while or the wind could be strong, you never know but we do know it is wind erosion

  54. The wing erosion tells you that a lot of sand that blows up against the fence. There is more sand on one side of the fence because the wind blew that way. I think the fence was put there to hide something that people shouldn't find out about.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The fence keeps some of the sand on one side, but not all of it. One side of the fence has more sand on it because the sand gets caught on the fence, which gives it the allusion that closer to the fence there is more sand on one side then the other. At least for a couple of feet.

    ReplyDelete
  56. the wind makes the sand blow up on one side of the fence

then the sand builds up on one side

i think the fence was put there to keep the sand from blowing on to the house

    ReplyDelete
  57. the sand was probably moved fairly fast by strong winds

    ReplyDelete
  58. This fence tells about wind erosion because the fence looks kind of weathered on the side you see. It tells about dunes because dunes form when sand is stopped by an obstacle. There is sand on one side of the fence because the wind is blowing from that side and the sand in the wind is stopped by the fence. The fence could have been put there to stop the sand.

    ReplyDelete
  59. It tells you that the wind is strong enough to push over a fence. The wind blew the sand there. The fence is there to slow the dune's movement.

  60. This fence tells me that dunes can pile up against blocks like this fence and the dunes travel by the wind pushing them and the fence is blocking the dunes. There is more sand on one side of the fence because the wind is trying to push the sand toward the other side but the fence is blocking the movement of the dune. The fence probably was put there to preserve the dunes.

    ReplyDelete
  61. There must be a lot of wind on the beach because the beach is exposed without any trees. The fence could be to separate properties or to stabilize the sand. The reason why most of the sand is only on one side is the fence is because people might live one the side of the fence with sand and they might trim the grass and maintain the beach.

  62. 1. The wind is very strong.

    2. I think that there is more sand on one side because the wind is blowing from that direction.

    3. The fence could have been put there so that people don't go up there, or to seperate property lines...

  63. The wind is so strong it is worth taking precautions against.

  64. That picture tells me that the sand gets eroded down into the ocean, but is also massively effected by wind. The sand is greater on one side because of beach erosion, and wind. Because the fence acts as a wind break for the sand on the other side. also because there are lots of plants holding the sand together on the other side. I think the fence was put there to save the dunes because without them the wind would blow away all of the sand. And then there would be no sand left for the plants and grasses to grow in. Thus not having any vegetation for the animals to feed off of. And then the animals would die. Basically it would kill the whole environment if the fence wasn't there. Also to hold the grassland on the other side from slipping downhill into possibly the ocean. The fence as small as it is helps keeps the land together. And it could be there to prevent erosion so that structures behind the fence won't be unstable because of it. It also could be there to mark beach property, but that is the least likely in my mind.

  67. The wind erosion is telling you that the sand is piling up on the fence. The dunes are very high. There's more sand on one side of the fence is because the sand is trying to keep the ground leveled. The fence was put there to keep sand from going on to land in grass.

  68. the wind is strong. it carries the sand from one place to another, burying the fences beneath the sand. there is more sand on one side of the fence because the wind is blowing in one direction, so the sand is higher on one side than the other. the fence is probably put there to separate the land or property.

  72. THE WIND HAS BLOWN THE FENCE A LITTLE BIT THE FENCE IS BLOCKING THE WIND FROM GETTING TO THE SIDE WHERE THERE IS MORE SAND

    ReplyDelete
  73. I think It was the wind that made the sand go up and over the fence or sense theres holes in the fence the sand might blow from the wind to the other side Also the wind is blowing one way.I think the wind erosion might be telling the sand is pilling up onto the fence. The dunes might be very high. And i think the fence was put there so you know not to step on the grass and for the sand not to go onto the grass.

  76. the wind must of moved dunes that hit the fence, and the fence must have been put there so people wont step in and/or on the dunes because there might be snakes living in the dunes. There is more sand on one side because the picture is probably taking place on the beach.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I think there's more sand on one side because sand was kicked on that side or the wind blew the sand around.

and i think the fence was put there ether to keep an animal away or to protect that side because maybe there was a problem on that side of the beach.

    ReplyDelete
  78. 1. the wind is very strong.
    2. because when the wind blows the sand flys or moves around and it moved to the other side of the fence.
    3. because theres a field on the other side probably to seperate the property between them.

    ReplyDelete
  79. the wind will blow on the sand and the fence and move the sand to make it weak and then the fence will move because of the weakness of the sand
.Also the wind will have more force and it will have more force and be slower

  87. 1. On one side of the fence the sand is taller than the other side.
    2. There is probably more sand on one side than the other because of the wind.
