It has been estimated that there are over 861 billion tonnes of proven coal reserves worldwide. This means that there is enough coal to last us around 112 years at current rates of production. In contrast, proven oil and gas reserves are equivalent to around 46 and 54 years at current production levels.

  4. Coal is America’s mighty rock. Because coal burns at a slow rate for a long time, it’s more efficient as an energy source than other fossil fuels. And the United States is naturally well-endowed with coal resources—25 percent of the world’s coal reserves are within our borders.

  7. There are coal deposits where millions of years ago there were swamps. The coal builds up from decayed plants. This gets covered with sand and stone and then gets compressed into coal. The age of the coal can tell us how long ago the land around it was like this. If the coal is old, then the land was a swamp a long time ago. If the coal is new, the land was a swamp sooner than later.

  13. If you are looking for where in the country, Wyoming is a place with many coal deposits. If you are looking for geographical, they are found underground, possibly in caves or ravines.

The area that the coal was in used to look like trees and a river, then the trees fall into the river and then they compress and heat into a form of metamorphic rock called, coal.

In 1999, China was the top producer as well as the top consumer of coal. The top three coal producing countries are China, USA and India. The order of consumption also follows the same pattern.

  32. Coal is mostly in China and there is a lot in the United States. Think about what the Earth must have looked like 300 million years or so ago. The land masses we live on today were just forming. There were swamps and bogs everywhere. The climate was warmer. Ancient trees and plants grew everywhere. Strange looking animals walked on the land, and just as weird looking fish swam in the rivers and seas. Tiny one-celled organisms called protoplankton floated in the ocean.
